Statue of Athene wearing her helm

Athênê was the goddess of wisdom, good council, heroic endevour, defensive warfare, weaving, pottery, sculpture and the goddess of the defense of towns. Athênê was the daughter of Zeus' first wife Mêtis. After Mêtis became pregnant with Athênê a prophecy was made that said if Mêtis bore a son, the son would be greater than his father. To avoid this Zeus swallowed Mêtis whole. Athênê was born inside of Zeus where she spent years growing. Eventually one day Zeus developed an unbearable headache, he called for Hêphaistos who brought his ax. Hêphaistos split Zeus' head and Athênê emerged fully grown in full battle armor. Athênê then join the Olympian council which at the time had nine members.
